Clearance Sale: Netgear WNDR3400 Dual Band Router with NAS & DD-WRT Firmware (N12,000.00)

wndr3400The Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router WNDR3400 supports true dual-band and offers fast wireless performance and long range. It has a useful set of networking features, such as Guest zone, network storage, traffic meter, and USB external hard-drive support for network storage. Also, it’s aesthetically pleasing and comes with an intuitive Web interface, all at an affordable price.

It has the stellar performance and features of a high-end wireless router and offers all-round great wireless performance on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands with excellent range, especially on the 2.4GHz band.

If you’re looking for a well-rounded wireless router for your home and don’t want to spend much, the WNDR3400 is your only choice.

The DD-WRT Advantage

DD-WRT is an open-source alternative firmware for routers. Its software unlocks features that are not ordinarily present in Netgear WNDR3400. It is, unarguably, the best aftermarket router firmware upgrade around. It is a popular router firmware choice for hobbyists, homes, businesses and router manufacturers as well. Put simply, DD-WRT Turns Netgear WNDR3400 into a turbo-powered router.

Indeed, your router is only as good as its firmware. DD-WRT has been flashed on the WNDR3400 router in order to grant the user extra functionality, which hardware manufacturers seem reluctant to include in stock software.

Features

techspecs-wndr3400-diagram-photo-largeThe WNDR3400 is capable of simultaneously broadcasting Wireless-N signals on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. The 2.4GHz is the popular wireless band shared with other home devices such as cordless phones and Bluetooth headsets. The 5GHz band is somewhat more exclusive and therefore should offer better throughput performance. By being dual-band, the WNDR3400 supports virtually all existing network clients.

The WNDR3400 comes with a USB port for NAS function. The router supports hard drives formatted in both NTFS and FAT32 file systems. This means you can just plug in your current external hard drive with data already on it and share it with the rest of the network. The router supports Windows’ SMB protocol, which allows any computer in the network to access its storage using a network browser (such as Windows Explorer) without having any additional software installed. It also supports Macs and the shares will automatically appear in Finder.

The router restricts access to this NAS storage via password. You can set a password for read-only access and another for read/write access to a particular folder on the external hard drive. Once set, the restriction is applied to anyone wanting to access that folder. The router’s NAS feature can also handle other NAS functions such as FTP and HTTP. You can also set up remote connections to access the data via Internet.

  • For the download junkies, free browsing every day from 10pm to 8am.

Other benefits include;

Wish the mobile networks and other ISPs will be less rigid with their pricing and take a cue from this. Would be great, though, if Cobranet could come up with some sort of MiFi so i could ditch the mobile networks finally!

Nice move, Cobranet.

The Long Trek

Taking my car to work the last few days have been kind of hectic. While the roads have become freer, getting a good parking space have been a bit of a problem.

My office is located within the grounds of a very expansive and very high traffic shopping complex. If you are early to work – which you should be – you have the privilege of parking in the company reserved spots.

The trouble, however, starts at the end of the day’s business. You are tired and hungry, in a hurry to go home, only to find your car blocked off by some late Christmas shopper who is no where in sight.

This week i decided to commute to work. The stress involved in going by public transportation is nothing compared to the pent up fury I work myself into every night. Looking at the brighter side, the stress might even be a good opportunity to part with some of the pounds of weight i have acquired over the years which i would not mind letting go of.

It was also an opportunity to try out the new android workout app that i just discovered in the Google Play store, Noom Walk. Called a “Pedometer“, the app counts the number of steps you make on a daily basis and tries to rank you with your friends on Facebook and Google+ that uses the same app.

By the time i got home yesterday, i had taken well over 5000+ steps, though most of it was within CMS – Marina axis (Lagos Island) where i got lost while trying to locate a branch office.

What the app does and does well is to encourage you to outdo your previous records, with you keeping fit in the process. It also throws you into competition with your online friends.

What it does not do well is that the app tends to go to sleep when your phone goes to sleep, with you losing valuable step counts in the process. Also, the counts does not seem very accurate, with the inefficiencies never in favour of the user.

Deezer Music Service – Unlimited Music Downloads

A few weeks back, i wrote about Xbox Music, a Windows 8 app that gives you access to an estimated 30 million+ of songs to stream for free on your PC (Online or Offline mode), on the web and on your android & iOS tablets or phones .

This music service, however, has at least 2 major flaws;

deezer

  • The mobile apps does not have an offline mode. You can only stream music online – Data services required!
  • At US$9.99 monthly subscription fee, it is not competitive.

For those of us living in Africa – except, perhaps, South Africa – we have very limited music service options. Popular services like Spotify, Rdio, Rhapsody, Google Play Music and Amazon are just not available.

It was only by chance that i stumbled on this less known music service called Deezer. It boasts of a presence in a whooping 182 countries, including Nigeria. The first thing that struck me was the similarity in its song database and that of Xbox Music.

The following are what i will consider as the strengths of this service;

  • Seemingly similar song database to Microsoft’s Xbox.
  • A more affordable US$4.99 (NGN850) subscription fee per month, giving you access to 30 million+ music tracks including Nigerian hit tracks .
  • Offers mobile apps for iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry platforms.
  • Offline music playback both on the desktop PC and on your mobile devices.

Fortunately, Deezer offers a 15 day trial. You have nothing to lose, why not give it a try?

Process Automation – Siphoning Fuel From Keg To Generator

DavoltaIn this part of the world, Nigeria, it is very safe to say that power from the National grid is almost non-existent. Most homes generate their own power supply from petrol or diesel generating sets.

I pride myself as the “Director of Technical Operations” for my home. This in simple terms mean that everything – aside from kitchen and domestic chores – fall under my jurisdiction. Mechanic, system administrator, electrician, handyman, etc are all my responsibility – or at least i try to do my part before i call in the professionals to undo all what i must have turned upside down.

Perhaps the chore i hate the most, and which needs to be done about every 2 days, is filling the tank of the power generator with petrol. I hate it. Apart from the health risk from the fumes, it so happens that mosquitoes seem to love dwelling where generators are. Well, perhaps i am just being paranoid but i can swear it is true. I always have to tolerate these fumes and the mosquito bites for as long as it takes me to fill up my generator tank. I do this by pouring the fuel into a bowl from the keg, then fill the petrol tank with the bowl. Yes, very labourious.

I had always noticed it in the Lekki Expressway traffic on my way to work, an apparatus consisting of a pump shaped like that of a petrol pump with about a meter of hose hanging from its end. Seeing it, i guessed immediately what it was meant to do, siphoning fuel from kegs. But i was very skeptical about how efficient or durable the product is.

During one of these bumper to bumper sessions going to work, i decided to have a closer look at this device. The street vendor asked for about N3000 (US$18) for it which i immediately halved. I bought it grudgingly for about N1500 (US$9), expecting that i had wasted good money.

It was a DALVOLTA brand. And yes, it did deliver as was boldly boasted by the street vendor. Perhaps the feature i loved the most is that you can even work it unattended. Just prime the pump, and once the petrol starts coming out (somewhere between gush out and trickle out), you can leave it unattended. Just make sure you keep watch from afar so that it does not overflow. It took between 10-15 minutes to fill up the 25 Litre tank of my generator. Oh, did i mention that the keg needs to be in an elevated position?

In all, i think it is a N1500 well spent.

Anybody Need An Aviate Launcher Invite? [Android]

Aviate LauncherFor those who have not heard about Aviate Launcher, it is a new home screen replacement for Android devices that looks to offer you information right when you need it.

The app is an intelligent home screen replacement that is designed to show you relevant information depending on where you are or the time of day. It categorizes your apps so that they are organized, proactively shows you relevant information so you do not have to look for it, and it looks great in the process. This is unlike most of the home screen and launcher replacements we have around that focus primarily on giving you a way to personalize and customize your home screen without focusing too much on utility.

Aviate’s main home screen is a simple grid of cards. You can add and remove cards (widgets) depending on your preference.

Presently in private beta phase of development, you will need to have an invite before you can try out this beautiful app. The cool thing is anyone that has this invite can extend this priviledge to additional 5 people. The chain goes on an on.

Leave your email address in the comment box if you are interested in having an invite.

Cool, ain’t it?
